Why undergo a Gynaecological Examination?

A gynaecological examination serves multiple purposes:

  1. General Health Assessment: It helps assess the general health of the female reproductive system.
  2. Infection or Problem Identification: The examination aids in identifying potential infections or abnormalities.
  3. Symptom Investigation: If you experience itching, a burning sensation, abnormal vaginal discharge, or irregular menstrual periods, a gynaecological examination is crucial for diagnosis.
  4. Routine Check-ups: Even in the absence of symptoms, routine check-ups every three years (or more frequently with a family history of uterus or breast cancer) are recommended for preventive care.
What to Expect During the Gynaecological Examination?

During a gynaecological examination, you will be positioned lying down with your knees up and spread wide apart. The gynaecologist will conduct a physical examination of your vulva and vagina. Additionally, a smear test may be performed to identify precancerous cells in the cervix. The collected sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis, and results are typically available within a week (additional charges may apply).

A gynaecological examination is not painful. The internal examination may feel similar to using a tampon.
