What is a Dental Crown?

A dental ‘crown’ (also known as a ‘cap’) is a protective shell that is fitted and fixed over your existing tooth. It usually covers the tooth completely to protect it from breakage. It can be made in a variety of different materials and shades.

When is a Crown generally advised?

It is advised after a root canal treatment in order to give strength to the tooth. Also it can be suggested in the cases where tooth has got heavy filling and is prone to fracture. Sometimes the crown are also suggested for aesthetic reasons. Crown is also placed after an implant procedure is done.

What are the different types of Crowns?
  • Metal: This is Silver in colour and is generally placed in the teeth that are in the back (i.e. posterior) of the mouth.
  • Porcelain Bonded to Metal: This is a metal crown on which a white porcelain material is bonded. It is White in colour and can be closely matched to the shade of the teeth. The drawback of this crown is that more of the tooth material needs to be cut to accomodate porcelain as well as metal. Also in some cases a thin line of metal is seen along the gum line.
  • E-max: These can be matched quite accurately to the shade of the teeth. They are generally used in for the front teeth until pre molars as they have high aesthetics but the fracture strenght is less.
  • Zirconia: These are white in colour having very high fracture resitance. It is generally recommended for people who grind their teeth.
  • Gold: These are extremely strong and have high fracture resistance. They are yellow in colour.
