Mouthguard
What is a mouthguard?
AÂ mouthguard is a protective device for the mouth that covers the teeth and gums to prevent grinding and reduce injury to the teeth, arches, lips and gums. An effective mouth guard is like a crash helmet for teeth and jaws. It also prevents the jaws coming together fully, thereby reducing the risk of jaw joint injuries and concussion. A mouth guard is most often used to prevent injury in contact sports, as a treatment for bruxism (teeth grinding) or TMJ dysfunction.Â
What is difference between a Sportsguard and a Nightguard?
Sportsguard is an appliance made out of flexible acrylic which is often worn over the upper teeth in order to protect the teeth and gums from trauma during any sports activities.
Nightguard is usually to prevent the grinding of the teeth during sleep. This condition is called as bruxism and people wake up with jaw pain. It can sometime be loud enough to wake your partner. It can be usually noticed by a dentist due to worn or chipped teeth. This appliance, also made of flexible acrylic, is usually worn over the lower teeth. If bruxism is left untreated, it can permanently damage the enamel and gums.
