Nail Surgery
Why do I need Nail Surgery?
You will require nail surgery if you are in pain, if you suffer from reoccurring infections or are not happy with the appearance of the nail.
Will the Nail grow back?
In most cases no. During the procedure a weak acid called Phenol is applied to destroy the nail production cells. The reason for this is if you have trauma to the nail the cells that make that section cannot recover and will continue to make a diseased or ingrown nail. The phenol stops this production and therefore cures the issue. If the nail is allowed to regrow is will grow the same or even worse!
Why does the price vary?
Nail surgery usually takes 30 minutes to 1 hour however if you require multiple toes/sites of surgery or if the nail has severe deformity or disease it can take longer or require more Phenol to cure.
What are the types of Nail Surgery?
- Partial Nail Avulsion involves removing sections of the nail while leaving nail present.
- Total Nail Avulsion involves removing the entire nail.
The type of surgery required will be discussed in your pre op assessment.
How long will it take to heal post-operative?
Most surgeries take 2-4 weeks to heal/scab and dry however if you have any co-mobidities (e.g. Diabetes) this process can take longer. Infections post op can happen and this will also slow the healing process down. This will be discussed during your pre-operative assessment.
