Knee Pain

Knee Pain

Knee pain can be treated by Physiotherapist

The main knee joint is between the upper leg / thigh bone (femur) with the larger of the lower leg bones (tibia). There is a second joint between the femur and the knee cap (patella) on the front (anterior) side of the knee.

Also a pair of ligaments run on either side of the knee joint, forming the outer edges of the joint capsule – the medial and lateral collateral ligaments. These run along the inner and outer sides of the leg respectively. A second pair of ligaments lie within the centre of the knee, the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments. These stabilise the joint and prevent excess movement.

The joint capsule contains two horseshoe shaped articular cartilages, the medial and lateral meniscus, collectively known as the menisci. These lie in the inner and outer side of the knee respectively and acts as shock absorbers.

Common conditions associated with Knee pain:
  • Arthritis
  • Meniscus tear
  • Gout
  • Quadriceps/Hamstring strain injuries
  • Patellar Tendinopathy
  • Pre-patellar Bursitis
  • Baker’s Cyst
  • Soft tissue injuries
