Are tooth filling necessary?
Why do we need tooth to be filled?
A tooth which developes a hole/decay can get infected if not cleaned properly or delayed treatment. So it needs to filled to prevent the hole from getting big, to restore the normal eating function and to prevent infection.
What is a Tooth filling?
A tooth filling is when the hole or decay is completely cleaned and filling material is applied to restore to its normal shape and contour. This can help restore the aesthetics and function.
Types of Tooth fillings:
A tooth filling can be made of:
- Silver filling (Amalgam)
- GIC or Glass Ionomer filling (White) and
- Composite filling (Tooth colored).
Glass Ionomer is usually used in filling a baby teeth or the teeth which are sensitive as they contain flouride helping to strengthen the teeth, while amalagam and Composite filling are used in permanent/adult teeth.
Composite fillings closely resemble the same color as ones teeth. They chemically bond to the teeth so less teeth material needs to be removed as compared to the Silver filling which mechanically bond’s to the teeth and hence require more tooth material to be removed.
Our dentist will discuss this with you during the consultation and considering your preference most appropriate material will be used.
