Scaling & Root Planing
What is Scaling and Root Planing?
Dental Hygienists are the professionals who help to clean your teeth and remove any tartar buildup above the gum line. This procedure is called Scaling. Sometimes if the tartar buildup is below the gum lines than the hygienists have to do a deeper clean below the gum line and this procedure is called Root Planing or deep scaling. These procedures help in preventing the gum disease (periodontal).
What is gum disease?
When the bacteria from tartar or plaque builds up around the teeth it can cause inflammation of the gums. In many cases, the gums can detach from the teeth leading to pocket formation. In severe cases this can lead to bone loss around the tooth and subsequently leading to tooth loss. This is called gum or periodontal disease.
How can a Hygienist help you?
The hygienist can help you to remove the tartar by scaling or root planing. This can be done using sharp hook like instruments commonly known as hand scalers. Also, ultrasonic scaling, that uses pressurized water and air, can be used to minimise the discomfort. In some cases if the discomfort is more than an anaesthetic can be applied to reduce the discomfort. The hygienist then polishes the teeth to give you more confidence with your smile. If there are stubborn stains then the hygienist can recommend airflow treatment to give you a brighter smile.
